Basic science tells us oil and water by nature do not mix; due to their molecular differences, the polarities of these liquids lack the attraction to form hydrogen bonds. Science aside, this incapacity to unite exists within the human condition, including the areas of friendship and money, politics and religion, truth and falsehood, and other properties where beliefs and statements collide. Agreement is easily accomplished in food preparation; for example, the surface tension of oil and vinegar is reduced by adding mustard, egg yolk or mayonnaise. In an ideal world, an enduring blend of empathy could remedy the ongoing challenges of humankind, an emulsifier of unity.

This quarter, we received many fine submissions for our theme of “Oil & Water,” poignant, evocative, and thought-provoking work. Thank you to the authors for their words and stories. We hope you enjoy reading all of the wonderful offerings and encourage you to submit your writing to our 20th Anniversary Issue. September’s theme is “Muse.” Let us celebrate humanity, literature, and the creative community at large. It is our honor to serve you.
