My Lucie love, beloved darling dear,
you are the reason why the sky is blue.
And in this I am being quite sincere:
I want you as my dear wife, wedded true.
My soul’s delight exists in only you;
I glow with pride and love when you are near.
And when we are apart, my thoughts are few,
my Lucie love, beloved darling dear.
It is not right that I am sitting here,
and writing this short poem just for you.
We should be close together, sitting near—
you are the reason why the sky is blue.
But will you read this poem, Lucie-loo?
My plaintive voice you never seem to hear.
I sometimes think that, me, you see right through,
and in this I am being quite sincere.
And though I am quite insubstantial here
and pass through every surface that I view,
my love for you, good Lucie, I revere:
I want you as my dear wife, wedded true.
We’ll honeymoon in Spain, or in Peru;
we’ll have no ties to bind us there or here.
The world is open wide for me and you,
and though I’m dead, you’ll never have to fear,
my Lucie love.
