Because he possesses no understanding
of time; of a yesterday, today, or eternity

our cat sits with patience each day
at the foot of our French doors

stalking a bird he saw perched once
on the backyard fence long ago.

If human, he would be seated forever
beside a telephone that no longer rings

endlessly checking an empty mailbox
for letters no longer written
