of time; of a yesterday, today, or eternity
our cat sits with patience each day
at the foot of our French doors
stalking a bird he saw perched once
on the backyard fence long ago.
If human, he would be seated forever
beside a telephone that no longer rings
endlessly checking an empty mailbox
for letters no longer written
